National Grating FRP Solutions Increase Safety

June is National Safety Month – the annual observance to help keep each other safe from the workplace to anyplace.

National Grating prioritizes safety at our own facilities as well as with our customers’ projects. We believe our products and solutions can help to make your projects safer so that we can all go home to our families at the end of the day.

In 2021-22 the National Safety Council counted 450,540 injuries in the USA related to slips, trips and falls. This translates to an injury rate of 22.6 per 10,000 full-time workers. With slips, trips and falls being one of the biggest causes of workplace injury, we are dedicated to doing more to ensure workspaces are safe.

National Grating prides itself on offering products that can improve the safety of workplaces everywhere.  Below we go into more detail about how National Grating FRP Solutions increase safety.

National Grating FRP Solutions are Anti Slip

national grating anti slip coating
The gritted anti-slip coating on this sheet of Molded FRP Grating increases safety and reduces slipping risks on walkways.

Our anti slip Molded and Pultruded Grating products are designed to ensure walking surfaces are not slippery and hazardous.

FRP products such as non-slip treads, nosings, and grating, provide excellent traction. This minimizes the risk of slips, trips, and falls, especially in areas prone to wetness or spills.

We created a related article about Winter Applications for FRP Grating, Stair Treads and Railings

National Grating FRP Solutions use High Contrast Colors for Safety

Our FRP Stair Treads and Stair Tread Covers combine anti-slip coatings with high contrast yellow nosings for high visibility.

national grating frp beams are lightweight
FRP Products have a high strength to weight ratio. One person can easily carry a twenty foot FRP I Beam because it is so light.

National Grating FRP Solutions are Lightweight and Safe

Worker Safety:

The lightweight nature of FRP products reduces injuries associated with lifting and handling heavy materials during transportation, installation and maintenance.

national grating frp products are long lasting
FRP Products like this stair tread cover will outlast the corroded metal stair case structure.

National Grating FRP Solutions are Long Lasting

Longevity:

FRP won’t rust, corrode, or attract insects, ensuring a steady surface for workers over time.

National Grating FRP Solutions are Impact Resistant

FRP grating withstands impact, reducing the risk of dents or tripping hazards caused by dropped tools or heavy items.

National Grating FRP Solutions are Non-Conductive

Unlike metal systems, FRP grating doesn’t conduct electricity. This helps prevent electric shocks.  FRP is an excellent and safe choice for all applications involving the risk of electrocution.

National Grating FRP Solutions do not require welding

With FRP products there is no need for welding which reduces potential safety risks. Welding involves working with highly heated metal and sparks, making burns and fires a significant safety risk. FRP Products are simply fastened with nuts, bolts, washers, and clips.

National Grating FRP Solutions reduce liability

Liability Reduction: By proactively minimizing accidents, businesses can lower their liability and associated costs.

National Grating FRP Solutions have Extreme Hot and Cold Resistance

Cold Resistance:

  • Non-Conductive: In harsh weather environments like extreme cold FRP Products won’t adhere to skin. Unlike steel, FRP doesn’t conduct heat, making it safe to touch even in arctic applications.
  • Mechanical Strength: FRP retains its strength at low temperatures, unlike some metals that become brittle.

Hot Resistance:

  • Thermal Stability: FRP maintains its structural integrity at high temperatures.
  • Low Thermal Expansion: Unlike metals, FRP has minimal expansion and contraction with temperature changes.
  • Fire Resistance: FRP doesn’t burn easily and has low heat conductivity.

Aesthetics: Standard gray and yellow coloring isn’t for everyone. Custom colors help make your design concept a reality. Whether it’s for architectural elements, walkways, or industrial applications, color customization enhances the visual appeal of your space and takes your project from ordinary to exceptional.

Safety and Visibility: Different colors can be used to indicate specific areas or hazards. For example:

Tailored Fit: Custom-cut grating ensures a precise fit for specific areas or irregular shapes. It allows you to match the grating to existing structures or equipment.

Replacement: When replacing damaged sections of existing grating, custom cuts ensure seamless integration without compromising structural integrity.

Pipe Penetrations: Custom cuts accommodate pipe or equipment penetrations without additional support.

Remember to consider load requirements, chemical resistance, and slip resistance when selecting FRP grating. Consult with our FRP experts for the right configuration!

Hi Dylan

I bought some grating from you a couple months ago.

Just wanted to let you know I did receive your gift card, that was very thoughtful.

My project was delayed due to weather and vacations. But I did cut and install the grating today.

I’m sure it is an unusual application. I was rebuilding the deck that is on top of my house and needed material that could span the 43 inches across the peak without contacting it, there was only a couple of inches for  clearance. The original deck design had supports that rested on top of the shingles which caused leakage.

Your fiberglass grating was the only solution I could find .

I’ll send a photo of the finished deck in a few weeks!

Hi Dylan, received your letter in the mail, very nice touch, its not very often we see any hand written letters these days, let alone a GC.

I have attached a couple pictures of the FRP grating that I installed on my dock gangway. Its looks so much better then the old plywood.

When my neighbours compliment me on it I’ll make sure to pass along your info so they can do there docks as well.

Now I’m off to Tim Horton for my afternoon coffee.

Thank you.

frp structural shapes | fiberglass grating

What are Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Structural Shapes, and what are they used for?

FRP I-Beam
FRP I-Beams were used in this restaurant as it looks great and compliments the beautiful design.

FRP Structural Shapes are Beam, Angle, Channel, Plate, Rod, Tube and other Custom Shapes/Sizes made with pultruded Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic instead of traditional materials like steel. This gives them certain advantages that are similar to our Molded and Pultruded FRP Grating.

At National Grating we don’t just sell FRP, we sell FRP solutions. Part of that offering is in the form of FRP Structural Shapes like Fiberglass Beam, Fiberglass Angle and Fiberglass Tube. On this page we will go over what these FRP products are, and what they are used for.

National Grating FRP Structural Shapes

Benefits of FRP Structural Shapes from National Grating:

Corrosion resistant: FRP won’t rot, rust, or corrode.

Strong, yet lightweight: Choosing FRP ensures savings on transportation and installation costs, since heavy duty equipment is seldom needed.

Virtually maintenance-free: Durable and weather-resistant for a longer life cycle.

Fire-retardant and nonconductive: Creates a safer environment free of electrocutions and fire related injuries.

Dimensionally stable: Won’t shrink, swell, warp, or bow.

Highly consistent: Strength, appearance, and quality are the same from piece to piece.

Easy to fabricate and install: FRP can be cut, drilled and assembled with standard tools and is lightweight, eliminating the need for heavy duty construction equipment.

Non-leaching: Does not require environmentally hazardous preservatives to maintain visual integrity.

Fast turnaround: Most in-stock orders are shipped within the next business day.

What are FRP Structural Shapes used for?

lightweight FRP I-Beam
FRP Shapes are Lightweight! Pictured here is an FRP I-Beam at 6″ x 3″ x 3/8″ x 26.25′ weighing in at only 49 Lbs!

Industrial and Commercial Settings: FRP shapes are employed in industrial and commercial settings for applications such as railings and ladder systems. They offer durability and resistance to corrosion, making them suitable for heavy-duty use.

• General Construction: The lightweight yet durable nature of FRP shapes makes them suitable for general construction applications where a high strength-to-weight ratio is required.
FRP shapes can be used in various structural applications to provide long-lasting, corrosion-resistant solutions.  They are often utilized to reinforce wooden structures, strengthen columns and beams, and retrofit structures for seismic resistance.

• Structural Engineering: FRP profiles such as tubes, rods, channels, and angles, are used in structural engineering applications for new construction, as well as for reinforcing and strengthening existing structures.
They are employed in the construction of beams, columns, walls, and façade systems due to their high strength, lightweight nature, and corrosion resistance.

• Seismic Retrofitting: FRP shapes are utilized for seismic retrofitting to enhance the resistance of structures to earthquakes.
They are applied to increase the seismic resistance of concrete columns, beams, walls, and floors, thereby improving the overall strength and durability of the structures.

• Infrastructure Components: FRP shapes find application in the construction of various infrastructure components such as tanks, manhole covers, and bridge rehabilitation.
Their resistance to chemicals, durability, and low-maintenance properties makes them ideal for infrastructure applications.

FRP Ladder C-Channel
Here, C-Channel FRP Beams are used for the safety cage of this ladder while square FRP tubing is used for the construction of the ladder.

• Corrosive Environments: Fiberglass structural shapes are well-suited for use in corrosive environments, such as in the chemical processing industry, water treatment plants, and marine applications, due to their excellent corrosion resistance. Water parks and theme parks utilize FRP structures and grating for its ability to stand up to chlorinated water without rotting or corroding.

frp vs steel grating

Is FRP Grating better than Steel Grating?

Rusty metal grating is unsafe and unsightly.

At National Grating we believe Fiberglass Reinforced FRP Grating is better than steel grating.

For decades National Grating has been providing FRP Solutions to customers across North America.  Our years of experience in this industry provide the in-depth technical knowledge required to select the FRP material that meets the needs of your project. We are continually improving our line of fiberglass products with the latest innovations to provide our customers with the most cost-effective, high quality FRP solutions.  We also take pride in superior technical support, giving you the information you need to confidently make the right choice.

Here is why we believe FRP Grating and FRP Solutions are better than steel.

Strength:

Fiberglass grating offers comparable strength to steel but with added benefits like improved impact resistance and flexibility.

While comparable in strength, FRP grating is significantly lighter than steel, making it easier to install without heavy lifting equipment.

Corrosion Resistance:

FRP grating excels in corrosive environments as it does not rust or corrode like steel, making it ideal for use around chemicals or elements corrosive to steel.

Safety:

Fiberglass grating is non-conductive, providing safety benefits in electrical hazard workplaces. It also offers slip resistance and is softer underfoot compared to steel, reducing worker fatigue.

Cost:

While the production cost of FRP grating is higher than steel, the long-term maintenance-free aspect of FRP can make it a more cost-effective choice over time.  Steel grating requires ongoing maintenance and replacement costs.

These outdoor entrance stairs were rusty and worn out looking. Newly installed FRP Stair Treads improved the first impressions for the business, and added safety for their clientele.

Long Life Span:

FRP does not rust or rot and does not degrade due to sun exposure, moisture and humidity, or extreme heat and cold.

Maintenance Free:

FRP grating requires little-to-no maintenance costs post-installation, unlike steel grating that may need regular maintenance.

FRP Grating has optional colors that are added during the molding process which instills the entire product with a consistent color that does not wear out or rub off. Unlike steel grating that is painted that can wear off over time requiring maintenance.

The advantages of FRP grating over steel include its strength, lightweight nature, corrosion resistance, non-conductivity, safety features, and cost-effectiveness in the long run.

What is Mini Mesh Fiberglass (FRP) Grating?

Grey mini mesh FRP Grating is a great looking dock material.
Grey mini mesh FRP Grating is a great looking dock material.

Mini mesh FRP grating is a special molded fiberglass grating with cross bars at the top, forming smaller holes at the top of the grating. It offers unobstructed water and airflow, slip resistance, and is suitable for marine environments, walkways, boat docks, marinas, mooring pontoons.

The mini mesh means that the holes are much smaller than our traditional FRP Grating.  This makes it perfect for barefoot use in a dock setting.  The top of the Mini Mesh Fiberglass (FRP) Grating is also covered in a light anti slip material for safety when wet..

The grating comes in various surface types, colors, and dimensions, providing a durable, comfortable, and safe walking surface for marine decking and other similar applications.

Mini Mesh FRP Grating is ADA Compliant (Americans With Disabilities). Mini mesh FRP grating is ADA compliant due to its small mesh size, which prevents small tools and objects from falling through, ensuring safety for personnel or equipment below. The small mesh also provides greater foot coverage, making it comfortable for bare feet and high heel shoe traffic. Additionally, the smooth surface of mini mesh grating allows for easier movement of wheelchairs and carts.

Pultruded FRP Grating has an anti slip top and gaps between each bar which can be large or small depending on requirement.

What is Pultruded FRP Grating?

Another FRP solution from National Grating that is perfect for dock and marinas is Pultruded Fiberglass (FRP) Grating.  Pultruded FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) grating is a high-strength grating made by assembling parallel bearing bars into a series of I-shaped or T-shaped profiles, which are then held together by cross-rods. There are also many variations where the ratio between the gaps in the grating and the FRP beams can change for large gaps or very thin gaps for bare foot traffic on a dock.

This construction provides exceptional strength, allowing it to span greater distances and support heavier loads compared to molded grating. Pultruded grating is manufactured by pulling fiberglass rovings and mats through guides, then into a resin bath, and finally through a heated die to form the desired bar shape. The grating is then assembled by installing the cross-rods spaced on 3” or 6” centers, and the bars are bonded with epoxy to ensure they will not move. It is corrosion-resistant, low maintenance, and offers a safe and comfortable walking surface, making it an ideal choice for various applications, including docks, walkways, and marine environments. Pultruded grating is available in different gap ratios, colors and heights, providing versatility for different project requirements.

Pultruded FRP Grating creates a rugged, long lasting and elegant walking surface.

Pultruded FRP Grating can be ADA Compliant (Americans With Disabilities). Pultruded FRP Grating can ADA compliant if a small gap ratio is chosen. 1-4000 and T-1800 Pultruded FRP Grating is ADA compliant due to its small gaps between bars which allows for easier movement of wheelchairs and carts.

FRP Grating is perfect for docks, decks, marinas and boardwalks due to the following features:

Comfortable and Safe Surface: The small holes or gaps allow light and water to pass through, providing a comfortable and safe walking surface, suitable for bare feet or any footwear typically worn in a marine environment.

Anti-Slip Properties: The concave and anti slip grit surface provide excellent anti-slip properties, ensuring safety for pedestrians, even in wet conditions.

frp grating marina yellow
National Grating also has yellow FRP Grating available for high visibility. Custom colors area available.

Corrosion Resistance: FRP grating is resistant to corrosion, making it durable in the harsh marine environment.

Versatility: It can be used for walkways, boat docks, marinas, mooring pontoons, and other marine applications, offering a strong, waterproof decking surface that will last for years.

Low Maintenance: It is corrosion-resistant and requires minimal upkeep, making it a cost-effective choice for long-term use in a marine environment.

Durability and Longevity: FRP grating is highly durable, resistant to saltwater, UV rays, and corrosion, making it ideal for marine environments.

Low Maintenance: Unlike wood that degrades rapidly in wet environments, FRP grating requires minimal maintenance and does not warp, crack, or splinter.

Customization: The ratio between the pultruded bars and the gap can be changed due to strength requirements.  Thickness and lengths can be customized as well.  Color is optional, with grey being the most popular and available.

What are FRP Stair Treads?

Fiberglass Reinforced Stairs are stair tread systems manufactured from Molded FRP Grating or Pultruded FRP Grating. They can be purchased with a yellow nosing for added visibility and safety as well as non slip top surface.

FRP Stair Treads are perfect for docks, decks, marinas and boardwalks:

FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) stairs are perfect for docks due to several key advantages:

pultruded frp stairs marine environement
Pultruded FRP Stair Treads are used here for steps into a lake from the dock. This application is perfect for FRP because it does not degrade from water exposure and has a anti slip top layer for barefoot safety.

Corrosion and Chemical Resistance: FRP Stair Treads are corrosion-resistant and can withstand exposure to harsh chemicals, making them ideal for marine environments like docks.

Durability and Longevity: Unlike wood that degrades rapidly in wet environments, FRP Stair Treads are durable and have a long service life, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

UV Resistance: FRP Stair Treads are UV stable, meaning they do not degrade when exposed to sunlight, ensuring they maintain their appearance over time.

Easy Maintenance: FRP Stair Treads are easy to clean with standard cleaning agents or by power-washing, translating to cost savings and reduced downtime.

Slip Resistance: FRP Stair Treads offer high friction factor, ensuring secure footing even in challenging conditions, making them safe for high-traffic areas like docks.

The corrosion resistance, durability, UV resistance, easy maintenance, and slip resistance make FRP Stair Treads an excellent choice for docks.
